Adult Fluoride: Should You Be Getting It?

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a natural mineral that can be found in water, some foods, and soil. However, the small amounts of fluoride found in these sources usually aren’t enough to fully protect your teeth from cavities.

What Are the Benefits of Fluoride?

Scientific studies have shown that fluoride can:

  • Strengthen your enamel, the outer layer of your teeth
  • Prevent cavities at certain levels
  • Help with tooth sensitivity by reinforcing weakened enamel

By incorporating fluoride into your dental care, you’re giving your teeth the extra protection they need to stay healthy.

Aren’t Fluoride Treatments Just for Kids?

Not at all! Fluoride treatments are important for adults too. As an adult, you’re still prone to cavities—especially in areas of gum recession, where the root surfaces of your teeth are more exposed. These root surfaces are more susceptible to decay, so a fluoride treatment can help protect them.

Why Do We Use Fluoride Varnish?

At Plano Family Dental, we use fluoride varnish for our adult patients. This sticky substance adheres to your teeth for several hours—much longer than traditional gels or foams. Because of this:

  • More fluoride is absorbed into your teeth
  • Less fluoride is swallowed, reducing any potential irritation to your digestive system

Dr. Varun Joseph ensures that each fluoride treatment is tailored to your unique dental needs.

What Should I Do After My Fluoride Varnish?

After a fluoride varnish application, you can eat and drink right away. However, for best results:

  • Avoid alcohol (including mouthwashes that contain alcohol)
  • Avoid very hot beverages like coffee for a few hours

At Plano Family Dental, we believe in providing the most effective and comfortable care for our patients.
